Wash Like a Pro: Five Tips for Performance Fabrics

    by Xavier Dominicis

Hotel uniforms in performance fabric hanging in a commercial laundry room care guide for luxury hospitality workwear by JA Uniforms.

Performance fabrics are built to stretch, perform and wick sweat, but they need the right care to stay fresh. Smart washing habits help preserve comfort, elasticity and longevity. Here are five tips to wash like a pro:

    Watch your water temperature:

To understand why cold water gets the nod here, note that heat kills elastane, spandex, and tech fibers. Over time, it zaps the moisture-wicking tech. Cold water preserves stretch and stops odors from locking in.

    Forgo fabric softeners:

Skip the fabric softener when washing performance fabrics. It coats and clogs the fibers, blocking the moisture-wicking channels in Dri-FIT uniforms and trapping odor. Dryer sheets cause the same buildup, leaving shirts less breathable and smelling worse over time.

Inside out is the way to go:

When it comes to fighting sweat, oils, and bacteria, turn your uniforms inside out before washing. Extra perk: Your logos and reflective elements stay crisp and vibrant.

    Go easy on detergents:

Choose those labeled for activewear or enzyme-based products. They break down sweat and body oils better than standard detergents. Skip overpowering  scents. They can cling to synthetic fibers and mask odors rather than removing them.

    Air dry whenever possible:

High heat can damage stretch fibers, warp the fit, and shorten the life of your garment. It is best to hang or lay flat to dry, keeping bright colors out of direct sunlight.

    Less is more:

When it comes to the care of performance fabrics, quick, cold washes get your workwear just as clean. Long cycles and high agitation stress fibers and reduce elasticity. As for loading your washing machine, a light touch wins.  An overloaded washer keeps water and detergent from reaching every spot.
