    It Starts at the Collar

    by Xavier Dominicis

The collar is where a uniform makes its first impression. Positioned at eye level, it is the most visible and most scrutinized detail, naturally drawing focus as it frames the face. In an instant, it sets the tone, signaling what the uniform stands for before anything else is noticed. A crisp, well-structured collar conveys professionalism, discipline, and attention to detail before a word is spoken.

“It also anchors the overall look,” explains JA Uniforms Founder Alex Arencibia. “As other parts of the uniform relax or move over the course of a long shift, the collar provides a sense of structure and steadiness. That role becomes even more apparent when you look at different collar styles and what each one communicates.”

    Point Collar:

The most traditional and recognized collar and a corporate go-to, the point collar is also favored by industries including hospitality and aviation. It does not distract or feel avant-garde. Instead, it casts a trusting and familiar vibe that functions well in settings where credibility matters.

    Spread Collar:

A more contemporary take on the point collar, the spread collar features  wider spacing between the collar points. Opening up the neckline, this results in a broader, more horizontal emphasis. From a comfort perspective, the spread collar is less restrictive while  maintain structure throughout the day for those in active customer-facing roles.

    Button-Down Collar:

Tidy, comfortable and aptly named, the button-down collar has  points that are secured to the shirt with small buttons, keeping the collar firmly in place. In hands-on-work settings this prevents the collar from flaring or curling, resulting in a well-composed look.

The hidden or concealed button-down collar offers a more polished take on the classic button-down collar, combining the same functionality with a sleeker, more refined appearance. As with a traditional button-down, the collar points are fastened to stay in place, but the buttons are tucked beneath the collar. This allows for all the same practical advantages of a button-down collar while maintaining a clean, uninterrupted look.

    Mandarin Collar:

A Mandarin collar conveys understated simplicity and quiet authority. “It’s refined, but not overly formal,” explains JA Uniform’s Alex Arencibia, who notes the design-forward collar is favored by hospitality, wellness, and tech-forward customers.

    Shawl Collar:

Defined by a smooth, continuous curve flowing from the neckline down the front of the garment, a shawl collar creates a softer silhouette devoid of pointed breaks or notches. Suggesting grace, polish and a heightened level of service, this collar is a staple of formal or luxury environments. It is at home in high-end hospitality and premium front-of-house roles.

    Camp Collar:

Lying flat against the garment to create a natural open V at the neckline, the camp collar has a casual, easy-going  vibe. Wearers in warm-weather settings benefit from better air flow and a less restrictive neckline. This collar is commonly associated with hospitality environments that value comfort, approachability, and a relaxed atmosphere rather than strict formality. Despite its casual orientation, when thoughtfully tailored with premium fabrics it can still feel intentional and smart.
