From Armor to Athleisure: The Evolution of Uniforms

    by Xavier Dominicis

Uniform evolution: from Roman armor and vintage flight attendant suit to modern athleisure workwear. From Armor to Athleisure: The Evolution of Uniforms

Uniform trends have always been a mirror of what societies value at a given moment.

Military uniforms in ancient Rome, China, and later Europe established rank, loyalty and intimidation.

During the Industrial Era, mass production made uniforms cheaper. Railways, factories, law enforcement, postal services and hospitals adopted uniforms to signal professionalism and trust.

In the early-mid 20th century uniforms offered respectability, order and conformity to nurses, pilots and flight attendants.

Safety and functionality led the way in the 1970s-1990s, before uniforms became brand touchpoints in the early 2000s then shifted to comfort and performance in the 2010s.

As for today’s uniform trends, JA Uniforms Founder and workwear industry veteran Alex Arencibia sums it up: “Uniform trends continue to prioritize performance and comfort, with smart, sustainable fabrics leading the way. Clean, minimalist silhouettes and neutral palettes dominate, while select brands use bold color accents to express identity,” he explains. “Athleisure-inspired cuts and stretch materials are further blurring the line between workwear and activewear.”

    What to look for

Performance and Smart Fabrics Continue to Lead  the Way

Seek functional offerings featuring durable, high-performance materials boasting stain resistance, temperature regulation, antimicrobial finishes and stretch. Eco-friendly garments sourced from organic cotton, bamboo, recycled polyester, hemp and TENCEL™ continue to gain favor for their breathability and environmental benefits.

Neutral, Clean Lines, Often with a Minimalist Aesthetic

Contemporary uniform designs are trending toward timeless, clean lines, often with  neutral color palettes (blacks, greys, off-white, cloud tones). A nod to serene modern elegance, Pantone’s 2026 Color of the Year is an off-white dubbed “Cloud Dancer.” This color is reported to have been influenced by monochromatic leanings in design, an approach that has been adopted by hotels and resorts in urban, trendy and boutique settings.

    Statement Colors and Brand Personality

Even as neutral palettes prevail, many hospitality brands are embracing daring colors and expressive accents to showcase their identity particularly in boutique hotels, eateries and bars. Vibrant hues or signature shades transform uniforms into an extension of the guest experience.

    Comfort-centric Cuts with Athleisure Influences

The boundary between traditional workwear and activewear keeps fading. With the rise of stretch fabrics, ergonomic tailoring and athleisure-inspired details, uniforms now balance a polished look with all-day comfort for active shifts.

Indeed, today’s uniforms – even our nation’s  combat uniforms, now breathable and moisture wicking – are a far cry from the armored chest plates of antiquity.
